What is the Affordable Care Act?
The Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare or the Marketplace) was signed into law in 2010. The goal was to make healthcare in the United States more affordable and available. As a result, many more people can now afford healthcare – if they can make it through the complex features of the Act.
Millions who were previously uninsured now have health coverage. The Affordable Care Act also offers subsidies to make plans more affordable to low and moderate income people and families. Under the ACA, you cannot be denied coverage because of your health history. That means those with pre-existing conditions can still get coverage.

What the ACA plans must cover
All Affordable Care Act plans are required to cover certain services. They include: Emergency services, preventive care, maternity care, newborn care, hospitalization, mental health services, and prescription drugs. The plans are not allowed to limit how much you’ll pay for coverage over a year or over your lifetime.
