Missing Children Day

May 24, 2018 By Insurance Experts Leave a Comment

Ask any parent and they’ll probably tell you nothing equals the pain of a child gone missing. And what about the child? What could be more painful than to be ripped from his or her family?

The Office of Justice Programs (OJP) initiative educates people on how to react when a child goes missing and how to identify a missing child. It works by disseminating state-of-the-art knowledge and practices, plus provides grants to implement these strategies.

Most of the responsibility for child safety falls to law enforcement at the state and city level. Our best defense is to encourage parents, guardians and others involved in day-to-day child care to work with these agencies as closely as possible.

There are many people, both individuals and those in law enforcement, who make exceptional efforts to rescue and protect our children. It’s why Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25th as National Missing Children’s Day.  Each year there’s a ceremony to honor those who go beyond the call of duty.

That Motorcycle Rider Could Be Someone You Know

May 22, 2018 By Insurance Experts Leave a Comment

Maybe you can’t think of any motorcycle owners you personally know right now… but chances are… you know someone who has ridden as a passenger on one. That’s why taking the extra effort to look for motorcyclists is personal to all of us.

Let’s face it, sometimes motorcyclists can be annoying. Some riders weave between cars in heavy traffic. Some seem to come out of nowhere and suddenly cut in front of you. Often they go fast. How you feel about this doesn’t matter. They have the same rights to the road as you do and are at a disadvantage if an accident occurs.

The best way to prevent any altercation on the road is to treat motorcycles as full size cars. Always allow them a whole lane. Since they’re harder to see, take a second, even a third look to be sure you don’t pull into their space.

Remember, even if you aren’t acquainted with any motorcycle owners, you may know the person who’s riding with them.

How to Live Safely With Food Allergies

May 15, 2018 By Insurance Experts Leave a Comment

Ingesting a food you’re allergic to is potentially life-threatening. Up to 15 million Americans have a food allergy and that includes one in every 13 children. Currently, the most common food allergies in the U.S. are:

Milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree nuts, Soy, Wheat, Fish and Shellfish.

Symptoms range from mild abdominal pain to anaphylactic shock. If you or someone you know has an allergy, try these simple steps to prevent a reaction.

(1). Read food labels. Any foods with potential allergens should be stored separately from safe foods.

(2). Before and after every meal, not only you…but everyone you eat with, should wash their hands to avoid cross contamination of allergens.

(3). Assemble an emergency kit with appropriate medications and an epinephrine auto-injector. And while you’re at it, make a second kit so you have one at home and another for your travels.

Go to www.foodallergy.org for more tips on how to live easily (and safely) with food allergens.

Could You Repeat That?

May 10, 2018 By Insurance Experts Leave a Comment

How often do you ask people to repeat what they just said? Or get asked to repeat something yourself? If you find yourself in either situation, the cause could be either the speaker or the listener.

The month of May is dedicated to promoting better hearing and speaking, both of which are affected by medical conditions. First, let’s look at speech.

Dysphonia, commonly called hoarseness or raspy throat, is a common complaint affecting nearly one-third of our population at some point in life. Causes range from history of tobacco use to patients who are professional voice users. A more serious cause is head and neck cancer.

The other side of the conversation is hearing. Throughout the world, otolaryngologists (surgeons who do head and neck surgery) are recognizing the importance of hearing loss prevention with early detection and intervention.

Conversations are tough when there’s a lot of background noise or you’re interrupted frequently. However, if you or whoever you’re talking to requires repetition under quiet circumstances, it’s time to see if medical intervention is needed.

We are social animals and conversations are one of the best ways to enjoy each other’s company.
